Laurence and Judy believe in bikes, poetry, good food, community, makerliness, the healing power of love and the basic goodness of all that is, including the bipedal hominids that don't live like us.

Jill Lepore's The Name of War, an investigation into American identity as it was forged by King Philip's War, 1675-1676, starts by scrutinizing the slippery words "war," "troubles," and "narrative." Lepore explicates bondage and captivity, savagery and merchandizing; she contrasts the politics of sovereignty and removal. Plus, there's a gazillion great footnotes and images. I can't recommend this book enough.
