Elizabeth Marshall Thomas's The Harmless People, 1958, is the story of the Gikwe Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert, with whom she and her family lived for months at a time. Thomas creates a moving anthropological study of the way human hunter-gatherer society worked for millions of years; and she also records its clash with modernity, in the 1989 epilogue. The Bushman ethos is one of non-violence and sharing, easy laughter and acceptance of what is.
